Softwood or hardwood?
Softwood, usually pressure-treated pine or spruce, is what Irish shops stock, and it's the cheaper choice. Hardwoods such as iroko or oak are heavier, more stable and dearer, and are usually made to order.
A solid timber gate is heavy and catches the wind, so it needs strong hinges and sound piers. Treat it with a stain or oil every year or two, and keep the bottom rail clear of the ground so it doesn't sit wet.

Questions we get asked
How much do wooden driveway gates cost in Ireland?
€145–€665 for a ready-made timber gate on its own, and about €462 for a 3 m pair. Fitted on piers, manual swing gates are €1,500–€2,500.
Do shop prices include hinges and posts?
No. A shop gate is the gate alone. Hanging a pair also needs sound piers or posts set in concrete.
Can wooden driveway gates be electric?
Yes, with a motor and hinges sized for the weight and the wind. Electric swing gates are €2,500–€3,500 fitted.
How often do wooden gates need treating?
Every year or two with a stain or oil, more often on an exposed site.
Do I need planning permission for wooden gates?
Usually not for the gate itself. Gates and gateways up to 2 metres high are exempted development under Class 5 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, subject to the site and its planning history. A new or wider entrance onto a public road needs planning permission.
