These are the prices Irish gate companies and guides publish. We re-read every page on 28 October 2026. None of them says whether VAT is included, so we write "not stated" and don't add it. A range is that source's own typical range, not a quote for your entrance.

Why two quotes for the same gate differ

• What's in the price. ShamFix's guide warns that a low headline figure may cover only a kit, a gate or the automation package. Ask for a line-by-line quote.
• Groundwork. New piers, foundations, a sliding track, ducting and trenching for the cable are labour-heavy. A level entrance with sound piers keeps the cost down.
• The motor. It has to suit the gate's weight, length, slope and how often it opens.
• Access control. Remotes are simple. Keypads, GSM and video intercoms add hardware and wiring.
• Safety devices. Photocells and safety edges should be on the quote. The Health and Safety Authority safety alert sets out why.
• Material and finish. Fabrication, powder coating and the size of the leaves.

What a proper quote lists

• The gate: material, size, finish and which way it opens
• Posts, piers or track, and who builds them
• The motor, control board and remotes
• Safety devices: photocells, safety edges, warning light
• The electrical connection and who certifies it
• Groundwork, removal of the old gate and making good
• Warranty and servicing terms
• VAT, stated

ShamFix's guide also notes that the mains connection must be done by a Safe Electric registered electrician, and the gate installer may arrange that subcontractor. Ask who does it.

Running costs

An electric gate needs a yearly check of the motor, the hinges or track and the safety devices. BM Alarm Systems puts that at €100–€300 a year, ShamFix at €150–€400, and Cork Security Gates at €150–€400.
