Sliding vs swing gates
Space, slope and budget decide it. Here's how to tell which suits your entrance.

Start with the driveway, not the gate. Swing gates need room to open in a full arc. Sliding gates need a clear run along the boundary beside the opening. If cars park close to the gate or the drive rises inside it, a sliding gate is often the answer. If there's no room to the side, it has to swing.
Swing gates usually cost less: €2,500–€3,500 electric, against €3,000–€5,000 for an electric sliding gate (BM Alarm Systems, VAT not stated).
Side by side
| Swing gates | Sliding gate | |
|---|---|---|
| Space needed | A clear arc inside the entrance | A run along the boundary at least as long as the opening |
| Sloping drive | Hard if the drive rises inside the gate | Suits slopes, as the gate moves across, not up the drive |
| Groundwork | Sound piers or posts | A track or cantilever, foundations and a motor base |
| Motor | Ram, articulated arm or underground | Sliding motor with a rack and pinion |
| Electric price | €2,500–€3,500 | €3,000–€5,000 |
| Wind | A solid leaf catches the wind | Less affected once closed |

When swing gates make sense
- A level entrance with room inside for both leaves to open fully
- Existing piers in good condition
- No space to the side of the opening for a sliding run
- A tighter budget
- A traditional look: double gates between piers
ShamFix's guide says a narrow, level entrance with sound piers usually favours swing gates (ShamFix.ie 2026 price guide, 21 September 2026, VAT not stated). Gates should open inwards, into your property, not out over the footpath.
When a sliding gate makes sense
- Cars parked just inside the gate
- A drive that slopes up from the road
- A wide opening, where swing leaves would be very long and heavy
- Room along the wall or fence beside the entrance
- A modern, flat-panel look
FÁLÚ, an Irish aluminium gate maker, says sliding gates cost more because they need heavier structural reinforcement, concrete sliding tracks or cantilever systems, more powerful motors and more safety systems, and calls them the solution for sloped driveways (FÁLÚ / Alustyle, 4 December 2025, VAT not stated).
Track, cantilever and telescopic
- Tracked sliding gate. Runs on wheels along a track set in a concrete base across the opening. The track has to be kept clear of stones, leaves and ice.
- Cantilever sliding gate. Hangs from rollers beside the opening, with a counterweight section, so nothing crosses the drive. Needs more run-back space.
- Telescopic sliding gate. Two leaves that slide over each other, for wide openings with limited run-back. FÁLÚ lists straight and telescopic systems as one of the things that sets the price.
Swing gate options
- Double leaf. Two gates meeting in the middle. The usual choice between piers.
- Single leaf. One gate across a narrower opening. Needs a bigger arc.
- Bi-folding. Leaves that fold as they open, for tight spaces. Less common and usually dearer.
Measuring up
Measure the opening between the piers or posts. For swing gates, measure how far into the drive the leaves will reach when open, and check nothing is in the way. For a sliding gate, measure the clear run beside the opening, along the inside of the boundary. Note any slope: stand at the gate and look at whether the drive rises. Take photos from the road and from inside. An installer will still want to see the site, but this gets you an honest first price.
Both need safe automation
An electric gate of either type is a moving machine that can trap or crush. The Health and Safety Authority safety alert says powered gates need force limitation, backed up by photo beams across the entrance inside and outside the gate, and that photo beams should never be the only protection. See gate motors.
Questions people ask
Are sliding gates more expensive than swing gates?
Usually. BM Alarm Systems gives €3,000–€5,000 for an electric sliding gate and €2,500–€3,500 for an electric swing gate, VAT not stated.
Which is better for a sloping driveway?
A sliding gate, in most cases. A swing gate can't open inwards if the drive rises inside it.
How much space does a sliding gate need?
A clear run along the boundary beside the opening, at least as long as the opening itself. Cantilever gates need more.
Should gates open inwards or outwards?
Inwards, into your property. Gates that open out over a footpath or road are a hazard and can be a planning problem.
Can I convert swing gates to sliding?
It's usually a new gate, track and motor, so price it as a new installation.
