Why a sliding gate costs more than a swing gate
BM Alarm Systems gives €2,500–€3,500 for an electric swing gate and €3,000–€5,000 for an electric sliding gate (BM Alarm Systems (Co. Meath), 4 December 2024, VAT not stated). FÁLÚ, an Irish aluminium gate maker, explains the gap: sliding gates need heavier structural reinforcement, concrete sliding tracks or cantilever systems, more powerful motors and more safety systems (FÁLÚ / Alustyle, 4 December 2025, VAT not stated). ShamFix's guide says a sliding system "generally needs more supporting work, including a track or cantilever arrangement, suitable foundations, rack and a motor sized for the gate", and that this extra structure can matter more to the quote than the gate leaf (ShamFix.ie 2026 price guide, 21 September 2026, VAT not stated).

FÁLÚ says every sliding aluminium gate is made to measure, and that where groundworks aren't already prepared it also does the concrete foundations, sliding tracks, and ducting and electrical preparation. Those are the lines that separate a €3,200 quote from a €7,500+ one.

- Removal of the old gate and making good
- Warranty on the motor and the finish
- VAT, stated
The Health and Safety Authority safety alert says powered gates need force limitation backed up by photo beams inside and outside the gate. On a sliding gate the danger points are the closing edge and the gap between the moving gate and the post, so ask where the photocells and safety edges go. See electric gate safety rules.
Automating a manual sliding gate later
FÁLÚ prices the upgrade at €1,200–€2,500, depending on the motor brand, safety edges and photocells, remote controls, and whether a keypad or intercom is added (FÁLÚ / Alustyle, 4 December 2025, VAT not stated). The gate has to have been built for it: a track or cantilever set up for a motor, and a duct for the cable. See manual vs electric gates.

Why are sliding gates dearer than swing gates?
The track or cantilever, the concrete base, a more powerful motor with a rack, and more safety devices. FÁLÚ and ShamFix both list that supporting work as the reason.

FÁLÚ gives €1,200–€2,500 to add automation to a manual sliding aluminium gate, depending on the motor, safety devices, remotes and any keypad or intercom.
Is a cantilever gate more expensive than a tracked one?
