Electric gate repairs

The checks to make before you ring, what a repair visit involves, and the published figures for servicing and replacing a motor.

Checked against each source on 29 October 2026. Each figure links to its source. How we check

Most electric gate faults are small: a photocell knocked out of line, a dead remote battery, a fuse, a track full of stones, a gate that has dropped on its hinges. A repair visit finds which, and the cost depends on what it finds. No Irish installer we could confirm publishes a call-out or repair price, so this page tells you what is published, what a repair involves, and when a motor is worth replacing.

What is published is the yearly service: €100–€300 (BM Alarm Systems), €150–€400 (ShamFix and Cork Security Gates).

Check these before you ring

  1. The remote.Nice's manual starts here: if the transmitter LED stays off, the battery is flat. If it lights and nothing happens, the remote may need to be re-learned by the receiver.
  2. The photocells.Wipe the lenses and look for anything across the beam: a bin, a branch, a parked bike. On the Nice control board, the PHOTO LED off means a photocell input is active.
  3. Power and fuses.A gate with no lights and no movement may have lost its mains supply, or blown a fuse. Nice's table says to check the 230 V supply and fuses F1 and F2 before anything else.
  4. The track or the hinges.Stones, leaves and ice in a sliding track, or a swing gate that has dropped and scrapes the ground, make the motor work against the gate. BM Alarm Systems lists worn hinges, dirty tracks and poor alignment as resistance a motor has to fight.
  5. The manual release. If you need the car out now, release the motor and move the gate by hand. Don't force a gate against an engaged gearbox: BM Alarm Systems says that can damage the motor, brackets, lock or gate.

Troubleshooting from the Nice ROX600/ROX1000 manual and BM Alarm Systems, 12 August 2026. Other makes have their own tables: the manual that came with the motor is the first place to look.

For the faults behind each symptom, see gate motor problems.

What a repair visit involves

  • Testing the mains supply, fuses and the control board
  • Checking and realigning photocells, and testing the safety edges
  • Checking the motor's force settings and the limit switches
  • Lubricating hinges or cleaning the track and rollers, and checking alignment
  • Re-learning remotes, or replacing a receiver
  • Testing the manual release and any battery backup

Cork Security Gates' description of maintenance, motor lubrication, electrical testing and safety sensor inspection, is close to what a repair visit covers once the fault is found (Cork Security Gates, March 2026, VAT not stated). Ask for the fault, the fix and the price before the work starts, and for the safety devices to be tested before the engineer leaves.

Repair the motor, or replace it

A motor that has stopped is not always dead: a control board, a capacitor, a limit switch or a worn gear can be replaced on their own. The question is age and parts. When the control board is obsolete, or the gate is being automated again from scratch, the published figure for a new automation package is €1,200–€3,500+ (ShamFix) and €1,200–€2,500 for a manual sliding gate (FÁLÚ). Set the repair quote against that, and against the motor's warranty if it is still inside it.

Replacing a motor makes the installer the manufacturer of the new machine. The Health and Safety Authority safety alert says whoever assembles a powered gate from parts is generally treated as its manufacturer and must make the whole installation safe, so a new motor means the force settings, photocells and safety edges are set up and tested again, not just bolted on.

After the repair

  • Ask the engineer to show the gate reversing on contact, and the photocells stopping it
  • Get the fault and the parts fitted in writing, with the warranty on the parts
  • Have the manual release demonstrated and know where the key is
  • Ask whether a battery backup can be added, if a power cut would lock you in or out
  • Book the yearly service while the engineer is there

The HSA's guidelines say a powered gate should be regularly maintained by a reputable company, with its safety features and closing forces tested, and that a log should be kept of maintenance and testing (HSA Guidelines on the Safety of Powered Gates). That logbook is also what shows a repair was done properly if anyone is hurt later.

Questions to ask a repair company

  • Do you work on this make of motor, and do you carry parts for it?
  • What's the call-out charge, and does it come off the repair?
  • Will you test the force settings and safety devices, and record them?
  • Is the control board still supported, or is this motor at the end of its life?
  • What's the warranty on the repair?
  • Is VAT in the price?

Questions people ask

How much does an electric gate repair cost in Ireland?

No Irish installer we could confirm publishes a repair or call-out price. What is published is the yearly maintenance: €100–€300 (BM Alarm Systems), €150–€400 (ShamFix, Cork Security Gates). A new automation package, if the motor is replaced, is €1,200–€3,500+ (ShamFix). VAT not stated.

My electric gate won't open. What should I check first?

The remote battery, anything blocking the photocells, the mains supply and fuses, and whether the track or hinges are jammed, in that order. Nice's manual and BM Alarm Systems both start with those.

Can I open an electric gate in a power cut?

Yes, with the manual release, which disengages the motor so the gate moves by hand. Don't force the gate before releasing it. Some systems also take a battery backup for a limited number of movements.

Is it worth repairing an old gate motor?

Often, if the control board is still supported and parts are available. Compare the repair quote with a new automation package at €1,200–€3,500+ (ShamFix) or €1,200–€2,500 for a sliding gate (FÁLÚ), and check the motor's warranty.

How often should an electric gate be serviced?

The HSA says regularly, by a reputable company, with the safety features and closing forces tested and a log kept. Nice's manual for its ROX sliding motors says at most every 6 months or 20,000 movements.
